Founded in 1978, The SuperJazz Big Band (formerly UAB SuperJazz) was
the first performing ensemble connected with the Music Department of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). The group, comprised of 21 of Birmingham’s top professional jazz musicians, is now is based at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, where it performs four concerts a year The group has remained a very popular jazz orchestra in the Birmingham metro area for more than 30 years.
SuperJazz has performed with many notable jazz artists, including Ernie Watts, Lou Marini, Jr., Lew Soloff, Chuck Redd, Andy Martin and Ellis Marsalis. In 2001, UAB Entertainment Records released a recording of SuperJazz featuring Ellis Marsalis. The CD, was recorded at UAB’s Alys Stephens Center for the Performing Arts. The band is directed by Everett Lawler and Mike Lingo. SuperJazz is no stranger to City States, having performed at the very first City Stages and numerous times over the years.
